Tramscape Tramway Photographs

Wuppertal, Germany : 9th-10th March, 1985
Wuppertal is famous for its Schwebebahn, the overhead railway, with trains hanging below track erected mainly above the River Wupper, from which the town got its name after the merger of Barmen, Elberfeld and several other local communities. The narrow corridor of the river led to the overlapping of local and regional public transport services and the eventual demise of the tramway which was once the focus of a large regional network in this industrial area to the south of the Ruhr.
In June 1985, the tramway system was cut back to two routes and was finally closed after 113 years of operation on 31st May, 1987.

A Schwebebahn car passes overhead as a tram waits at the tramstop at Alter Markt. The tramway ran closely alongside the alignment of the elevated hanging railway and it was decided that this duplication was to expensive to maintain.

Much of the standard-gauge network was still in good condition, with reserved alignments through the town centre, such as at Wupperfeld, but investment was poured into the modernisation of the Schwebebahn instead of the tramway

Wuppertal bought no new trams after 1960, but in the 1980s, with closure in sight, a number of redundant 8-axle Duewag trams were bought from Dortmund, such as 3828 (ex 44) built in 1959 and seen in Dortmund livery at Loher Strasse (above)
