The 5.6 km long single-track line with passing loops was opened in 1913 and runs from the S-Bahn station at the Berlin suburb of Rahnsdorf to Schleuse in Woltersdorf with a passing point at Thalmannplatz .

Leaving Rahnsdorf, the line runs through the Berliner Stadtforst (city forest) and through the small town of Woltersdorf. Traffic is very limited, especially outside the morning and evening peak hour, but at weekends there is substantial tourist traffic, with the Schleuse (lock) being a pleasant excursion area, with cafes and the opportunity for cruises along the river.
