Tramscape Tramway Photographs

Mainz, Germany

1984

Tram 209, seen at Hauptfriedhof, was one of three four-axle Grossraumwagen obtained from Aachen in 1973 on closure of that system. Dating from 1957, they were originally at Moenchengladbach but went to nearby Aachen when the former system closed in the mid 1960s. The Mainz tramway outlived these cars, although the system's future has been the subject of continuous debate between pro- and anti-tram factions on the city council.
