Lyon, France : Rack and Pinion Metro Line C

Four stations long, metro line C climbs steeply in tunnel from its terminus at Hotel de Ville Metro station, a short walk from the platforms of Line A, northwards to Cuire. It passes under the former silk factory area of Croix - Rousse with an intermediate open-air stop at Croix - Paquet. It was extended in 1984 by two stops to Cuire and allocated new rolling stock of similar body design to the other metro lines. Formerly stocked with single cars running on steel wheels and rack and pinion assisted for the steep climb, the new sets are two car trains with one carriage using the adhesion system only. Unlike other metro lines, power is collected from overhead by pantograph.
