Karlsruhe is one of Germany's most progressive tramway
undertakings and has pioneered the integration of local railway
routes into a regional "Stadtbahn" by running dual-voltage
trams from the rail lines on to the urban network. Prompted by the
relative remoteness of the main railway station from the city centre
and the relative high cost and low service quality on local lines,
Karlsruhe now has a network which is regarded as a model for other
cities considering the use of local rail alignments for light rail
transit.
