Tramscape Tramway Photographs

Hannover, Germany

The Hannover Stadtbahn is one of Germany's most progressive systems, with three basic routes running in tunnels through the city centre and on reserved alignmnets outside. New branches are continuously being built. The most recent major extension was to serve the World Expo grounds. One traditional tram route remains, so it is still possible to see cars run through the largely pedestrianised city centre. The green LHB-built Stadtbahn cars have largely given way to the newer silver-coloured cars and many have now found their way to Budapest for continued use. The Stadtbahn was well developed before low-floor tram technology became established, so high-level platforms dominate, even in suburban areas. The central underground interchange stations are notable for their spacious interior design and have been dubbed "underground cathedrals".
