Tramscape Tramway
Photographs
Essen, Germany
: 27th-28th March, 1995
The opening in November
1991 of the tram and duo-bus tunnel from Viehofer Platz to Berliner
Platz with the ramp at Krupp Hauptvervwaltung brought about the
closure of the replaced surface tracks plus the trams at Limbecker
Platz and the direct link to Alfred-Krupp-Schule via
Schederhofstrasse. Photos show the ramp at Krupp Hauptverwaltung,
plus views of the closed surface tracks, including two of replacement
buses at Schederhofstrasse.
Photos in Altenessen around Badeanstalt and Karlsplatz show the
surface alignment in this major northern suburb, subsequently closed
in 1998 north of Altenessen Bahnhof in conjunction with the further
extension of the Stadtbahn tunnels following their opening from
Universitat to Altenessen Bahnhof.
Other tram stops illustrated are Volkshochschule, Aalto-Theater,
Kronprinzenstrasse, Moltkestrasse plus various views in the southern
suburb of Bredeney. Photos also include the Stadtbahn tunnels in
southern Essen at Martinstrasse and Ruttenscheider Stern, and at
Hauptbahnhof and Porscheplatz in the city centre. Two views at the
open-air terminus of the Stadtbahn branch to Messe-Sud/Gruga show car
number 5203, one of the former London Docklands cars, now running in
Essen.
