Bruxelles has been pursing the construction of a fully- fledged metro as befits the city's status as "capital" of Europe with some lines being operated as underground tramways (or "pre-metros") in the interim. Near Porte de Halles (above) the tram is shortly to be moved from the surface in the first phase of upgrading of the Petit- Ceinture ring line around the east of the city centre.

6 axle articulated PCC tram 7804 on Rue Royale in front of the Palais des Beaux Arts with Place Royale in background. This is on the one route though the centre of Bruxelles which remains on-surface and as it runs closely parallel to the pre-metro between Rogier and Gare du Midi, it will  eventually be closed without replacement.

A 4 axle PCC tram in the central tunnel at De Brouckere prior to conversion to full metro. The "high-level" platform can be seen in the foreground - the lower platform will be brought up to this level once conversion is complete.
