2006

Continued financial hardship for German public authorities has affected Berlin badly despite the apparent abundance of money being invested in the city's continued reconstruction. This has led the authorities to consider possible closure of lightly used tram lines. These include the line from Grunau to Alt-Schmockwitz (covered in 2005) and three routes not covered until this year - Friedrichshagen to Strandbad Muggelsee, Friedrichshagen to Altes Wasserwerk and Grabbeallee to Schillerstrasse. The authorities do comment that continued investment is being made in the tram system and one new line has opened - along Bernauer Strasse (see photo left) from Eberswalder Strasse to Nordbahnhof. New photos also show the work taking place on Karl Liebknecht Strasse and at Alexanderplatz for the new "Alex II" development.
