Whilst Barcelona was restricted to a short quasi-museum tramline in 1987, things have changed considerably in recent years. In addition to the extensive heavy Metro, Barcelona now has two separate modern tramway networks named "Trambaix" and "Trambesos" which are on a course set for future expansion. Plans for both systems to be linked were unexpectedly vetoed by the city in early 2006 apparently on account of expected slow route speeds on the busy road to be used. An initial stretch of track was built along the prestige avenue, Diagonal, and proved popular and successful, encouraging the city to reintroduce trams in a big way
